Welcome to our “Did You Know?” section. Here we will provide a number of features for your information and enjoyment. We will always start this section out with something we think you may not know about OFSCU, or that we think you should know more about regarding OFSCU, or about issues related to the world of credit unions in general.
For our first “Did You Know?” segment, we feature something that is unique to OFSCU: Did You Know that we provide a scholarship program for our members? The “Hugh and Lucy Danahy Scholarship Fund” was established in 1979 to help cousins, of any age, continue their education beyond high school, whether at a trade school or university. Awarded every two years at our Williams Family Reunion Banquet, two cousins can receive a $1000.00 scholarship. One scholarship is awarded based on academic achievement and one scholarship is awarded based on financial need. For more information on the history of our Scholarship program and the application process, see the “Scholarship” section in our History section.
We currently have a pledge program that allows members to have an amount of their choosing moved from their respective share accounts to the Scholarship Fund account once every year. This account is a regular interest-bearing share account, so we get to watch it grow steadily year by year. The balance in this account as of June 2010 was $27,564.20. Our ultimate, long-range goal is to help the Scholarship Fund account reach the “magic level” of $33,333.33. When we help the account reach that level, and if the account were to then earn dividends in the 3% range per quarter, then the Scholarship account would earn dividends of $2,000.00 every two years, allowing us to provide two $1,000.00 scholarships at each Reunion, using only the dividends earned in each two-year period, without ever touching the balance in the account. At that point, the Scholarship Fund would become truly self-sustaining indefinitely into the future! That is our magical, long-term goal for the Hugh & Lucy Danahy Scholarship Fund. Consider helping us reach that wonderful milestone. Our Manager can always provide you with information on how to pledge shares on a yearly basis to that account. Information on how to apply for either of the two Scholarships will appear on this web site before, or by, January 1 of each Reunion year.
OFSCU TRIVIA CHALLENGE:
Next in this section, we will feature our OFSCU Trivia Challenge question. We will offer you a chance to test your knowledge of our credit union’s history, family connections, and other fun facts. In the beginning, we plan to provide a new Trivia Challenge every quarter or so, depending on our stockpile of questions. To do that, we will need your help in providing questions. So we invite you to offer your OFSCU Trivia Challenge question for future publication, and $10.00 will be deposited into the share account of any member whose question is selected for use on our web page. You can submit your great OFSCU Trivia question to Dave Cain at dcain13@cox.net at anytime. He welcomes all questions and looks forward to awarding the $10.00 prize to some deserving cousin with each quarterly web site update.
Now, here is your first OFSCU Trivia Challenge: We now have OFSCU cousins living in more than twenty states. How many of those twenty states can you name? (The first dozen or so should be easy for many of you, but then the challenge begins!) You can see the answer when we post the listing next quarter, in the fall of 2010, along with our new OFSCU Trivia Challenge question!
OTHER FEATURES:
Finally, we will provide other features in this section. (Perhaps you will suggest another feature for us to add in the future.) Our plan is to provide a copy of the latest edition of Shari's Relatively Speaking in this section, for those who inadvertently delete their e-mail version, or for those who do not yet have an e-mail address to receive her mailing, or for those who misplace their printed copy. Perhaps in the future we can develop a way to provide an archive of past editions of the family paper as well.
As you can imagine, this web site in its early stages will clearly be a work-in-progress. We want this section, and the entire web site, to be helpful, entertaining, and a means for bringing the family even closer together. Help us make that happen!!! Send any and all suggestions, ideas, and questions to Dave Cain at dcain13@cox.net.
